Building Templates with the AI Assistant
The template editor includes an AI assistant that can build a new template or change an existing one from a plain-language request. You describe what you want, and the assistant creates the components, layout, data fields, and sample data for you. It works for full documents such as invoices as well as for smaller edits like changing colors, adding barcodes, or removing a component.
Where to find it
Open any template in the editor. The AI assistant lives in the CHAT tab of the right-hand panel, next to Properties and Advanced. Type your request into the "Ask me to edit your template" field at the bottom of the panel and press SEND.

Creating a template from scratch
Open a new, empty template and describe the document you want. A few examples:
- Create an invoice with a modern dark blue header
- Create me 5 blue and 5 yellow shipping labels
- Build a packing slip with a table of items and a QR code
The more specific you are about colors, quantities, and content, the closer the first result will be.

What happens while the assistant works
After you send a request, the assistant plans and executes a series of steps. You can follow its progress in the chat panel, where each completed action is listed, for example Get Template Structure, Add Component, Set Session Data, and Validate Template. Larger requests can take a minute or two.
While it works:
- A STOP button appears so you can interrupt the run at any time.
- The template is saved automatically as changes are applied.
- If a step fails, the assistant retries it automatically. You will see "error, retrying" next to the step; no action is needed from you.

Reviewing the result
When the assistant finishes, the result appears on the canvas and the assistant summarizes what it built. It typically also:
- creates the data fields the template needs (you will see them in the Data Fields panel on the left),
- fills in sample data so the template is immediately previewable,
- renames the template to match its content,
- asks a follow-up question in case you want adjustments.

Making changes with follow-up requests
The chat is conversational, so you can keep refining the same template with additional messages. Examples of follow-up requests:
- Add barcodes to each label
- Remove the grey background
- Make the total row background light grey
- Add a footer with page numbers
Each request is applied to the template that is currently open in the editor.

Previewing the PDF
Use the editor preview at any time to see exactly how the generated PDF will look with the sample data filled in. The preview shows the final page layout, including repeating components such as label sheets or line-item tables.

Tips for better results
- Be specific. "Create 5 blue and 5 yellow shipping labels" works better than "make some labels".
- One thing at a time. For edits, smaller requests are more precise than one long list of changes.
- Check the data fields. If your integration sends data under specific field names, tell the assistant which names to use, or review the generated fields afterwards.
- Work on a copy of production templates. If a template is already used in a live integration, duplicate it first (File > Save as) and experiment on the copy.
Usage and credits
Using the AI assistant consumes your monthly credits. The note under the chat input reminds you of this while you work.
